In his video essay The Music Industry is Broken , commentary YouTuber Drew Gooden uses Eric Harvey’s book Who Needs Music? (referred to as Mood Machine by fans) to roast the current capitalistic hellscape of music consumption. The Teardown Streaming is a scam. Spotify doesn't actually pay per stream. The pool is fixed. All revenue enters one giant monthly bucket. Diluted payouts. More viral hits mean smaller pennies for everyone else. Fake artists thrive. Spotify populates its own "mood" playlists with ghostwriters. Plugging their own content. The platform hoards its own royalty payouts via pseudonyms. The algorithm won. Music is no longer art; it is background noise for sleeping. Independent exclusion. Actual indie musicians are systematically pushed out.
